Mike Hallett completed his Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Victoria before joining the ETH Zürich as a postdoctoral researcher. During his time in Switzerland, he focused on developing algorithms related to genome evolution. Returning to Canada in 2000, he joined the Departments of Computer Science and Biochemistry at McGill University, where he developed biomarker panels along with the corresponding machine learning/statistical methodologies required for gene expression signature analyses. This work was primarily targeted towards breast cancer and employed a variety of high-throughput technologies to profile tumors and their microenvironments. He held a Tier 1 Canadian Research Chair before joining Western University in April 2022. At Western, his research continues to concentrate on developing modern expression-based biomarker panels for early breast disease, including ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). He is particularly interested in techniques related to the profiling and analyses of formalin fixed paraffin embedded (FFPE) material. He also develops a PERTURB-seq system specifically designed to investigate higher-order genetic interactions in breast cancer. This technology leverages CRISPR-based perturbations, lentivirus-based infection strategies and various single-cell techniques to measure both transcriptional and protein expression levels.
